Signs of Autism in Infants

Autism in infants is hard to detect because the signs will only appear after several months or even years from birth. These early signs of autism are vague and parents will only become aware of it usually after the first year. Studies have shown that autism affects 1 in every 150 child but it is still uncertain as to what really causes it. Although not yet proven, experts say that genetics is the main cause of such disorder. This disorder affects the communication, interaction, interests, and social relationships.

Social Skills: Your child should begin imitating words or gestures such as hello and goodbye before 18-months. A child with Autism might not accomplish this developmental milestone and may not participate in social games like peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake.

Social development. Because of their lack of interest, babies with autism interact less with others even with their parents. They appear to be disinterested with baby games such as Peek-a-boo and do not want to take part in activities.Babies with autism respond less when their name is called. They do not react to noises which normal babies do. This is also probably due to their lack of interest in their surroundings.

It is very important to detect the signs of autism as early as possible. This will give the parents, pediatricians and experts more opportunity to diagnose children with ASD. As a result, early interventions can be applied and thus, reducing the negative effects of autism in a child's development. In a recent study, it was found that early intervention programs are highly effective in improving the IQ, language ability and social interaction of children as young as 18 months.

Each child develops differently from others and this is just normal. Some child talks or walks earlier than other. But for children with autism, their development is unusually slow. What is more observable is their communication skill. Compared to other children, they produce only limited words, gestures, or sounds that they use in communicating. Their facial expressions and body posture is also different.

Autism appears commonly on toddlers, causing delays in many basic areas of development such as learning to talk and interact with others. But this does not mean that toddlers are more prone to autism. It is just that the symptoms of autism will start to appear during this stage. This is when parents and pediatricians should be more attentive in looking out for the signs of autism. Toddlers are children who are about 12 and 18 months old. This is the period between infancy and childhood and when the child starts to walk.

Autistic children are different from normal children judging by aspects like personality, skills and abilities. Their behavioral development is affected by the particularities of many environmental factors. It is difficult to diagnose an infant or a small baby with autism, as the signs of autism are very subtle at such an early age. Sometimes, however, parents are able to detect the presences of certain abnormalities in the development of their child. Although parents aren't always able to tell exactly what makes their child different from other children of the same age, it is very important when they discover such behavioral particularities.
