Chiang Mai is Thailand's largest city in the country's northern region. It is considered the most culturally place in Thailand. In the past years, Chiang was developed into a more modern city. It has a vast number of attraction sites which bring thousands of tourists in the city every year.
Chiang Mai has become one of the most loved travel destinations in Thailand with its beautiful architecture, delectable cuisine, pristine mountains and waterfalls, and many things besides. Chiang Mai is not only one of the oldest cities in Thailand; it has also hosted western tourists for hundreds of years. The city traces its own origins back at least 700 years and there are records of European explorers writing home about this "fair and great town" in the 1500s.
The season kicks off in November with the Loi Krathong festival, a three day event, which has its origins in making offerings to the water spirits by placing little floats in the river. Leaves are sewn together to form little floats, filled with flowers, incense and candles. Before they are placed in the water, people pray and make wishes which are supposed to be granted by the spirits of the water.
It is the extreme high tourist season during this festival. Hotel rooms are at a premium and if you don't reserve early you might just be out of luck. Try to get in the city near the canal. The canal is the focal point for the activities. Most of the water comes out of the canal. For 3 days people are crowded around the canal celebrating, partying and just having a good time.
The most interesting and impressive festivities took place in the evening. On the waterfront, people lighted white paper lanterns - hot air balloons - and then let go of them, thus making them fly up in the sky. It was a marvelous sight! Fireworks, firecrackers - carnival atmosphere. Local youngsters seemed to take special pleasure in scaring unsuspecting adults by furtively throwing crackers at their feet. Everybody was having a good time.
Plant life in the park differs with the occurrence of the conifers and pine tress in this chilly environment. There is also a "good luck shrine", just recently opened by the King near the peak. The Mae Klang waterfall is also found here which one of Thailand's finest spectacles, which has an enormous beauty and elegance. The waterfall is a relaxing place for picnics and lunch. This waterfall is the much loved attraction in Doi Inthanon.
With no land paper they have no why of ever getting out of the poverty that they live in.
